Volunteers are more than just helpers. They are givers who encourage Therapeutic Recreation participants to participate to the fullest extent and provide support with commitment, and enthusiam. The rewards are paid in smiles.

Discover the rewards of volunteering! Make a difference while having fun, meeting other people and learning new skills by giving your time assisting people with disabilities to participate in recreation programs.
Qualifications
To be a volunteer you must:
- Be at least 14 years old;
- Be able to commit to the length of the program;
- Be willing to share your enthusiasm for recreational activities with others;
- Provide three references who you have known for at least one year;
- Meet the specific expectations as discussed during the interview.
Locations: Volunteers are needed throughout Montgomery County.
Student Service Learning Credit: Montgomery County Recreation is a Montgomery County Public Schools approved agency
Volunteer Opportunities
Montgomery County Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, offers a variety of options to assist individuals with disabilities. Find the volunteer opportunity that best suits your interests or schedule.
Classes
Classes for individuals with disabilities include swimming and pottery for adults, aerobic exercise classes for older teens and adults, and karate and sports programs for children age 6 and up. Check out the current Guide or visit our website at montgomerycountymd.gov/rec for an up-to-date list of current offerings. These classes run all year, with 6-10 weekly classes per season.
Mainstream Companions
Volunteers assist individuals with disabilities participate in recreation classes and activities. Companions provide one-on-one support to individuals with a disability who wish to participate in general recreation programs with their non-disabled peers. The need for volunteers is year round
Special Events
A number of special events such as theme dances, pool parties and picnics are offered throughout the year. Assisting with one of these events is a great opportunity to volunteer on a one time basis
Summer Day Camps & Programs
To volunteer in a camp for children or teens with disabilities, or as a mainstream companion for a child in a summer camp, please request our summer volunteer packet. (There is a fee that cover training, t-shirts etc.)
